John Linn is a performing singer and songwriter in Washington, DC, with 20+ years of experience playing guitar. Having grown up singing harmony and listening to folk music in the style of Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes and Woody Guthrie, John specializes in teaching traditional styles of American music, such as folk, blues and old time. He has performed his music in venues across the U.S., and sometimes travels to Europe as a singer, where he has toured internationally with Mastersingers USA, winners of Best Male Choir at the 2003 International Eisteddfod in Wales.

John is also an accomplished musical director. He directs the Americana Combo at St. Stephen’s Church, and in the fall of 2013, he served as Music Director for Lean and Hungry Theater’s production of Julius Caesar on WAMU public radio.

John is a certified guitar specialist from the Berklee School of Music, and a veteran of the Rocky Mountain Song School, where he has studied songwriting with Josh Ritter, Mary Gauthier, Dr. Ysaye Barnwell and Richard Shindell. He grounds his students in the fundamentals of guitar practice, with additional interest in improvisation, harmony singing and performance development.

He is very excited to be teaching with the team at Middle C, where he hopes to further experience and communicate the joys of the musical life.
